Acrylic nails and guitar playing = the good? the bad?

Hi,
I play fingerstyle guitar and im seriously thinking of getting some soon enough since my natural nails aren't cutting it. I know they (acrylic) must be maintained every 2 to 3 weeks. Is it true that you can wear acrylic forever as long as it's properly maintained? What kind of problems can I expect?

Thanks for the input!

Answer:
I don't think acrylic nails are designed to put up with the kind of abuse that a guitarist would give them. I have seen a guitarist use a metal thing that fits over the top of his finger - don't know what it's called, but perhaps a music shop could advise you.
