Stem cells are cell that are able to differentiate into specialized cell types but also retain the competence to renew themselves through cell division. They were first identified within embryos (babies within the womb) . In an embryonic blastocyst, stem cell of the inner cell mass proceed to develop into all of the tissues and organs of the body. In adults, progenitor cell and possibly multipotent adult stem cell act as a repair system for the body, replenishing more specialized cell. The existence of truly pluripotent stem cells surrounded by adult humans beings is still scientifically controversial.
stem cell are the cells from an unborn foetus that can be made into any body cells--brain cell, nerve cell, skin cells etc. they could be really adjectives for heart transplant patients for example, a new heart could be developed from stem cell. obviously nearby are lots of ethical problems with this though.
