A synthetically or (semi) manufucatured "opiate" would be referred to as an opioid. An opioid is made using any of the naturally occuring narcotic alkaloids (which are referred to as opiates). Thabaine, Codeine, and Morphine are the three prominent opiates. Some examples of opioids are heroin, demerol, dilaudid, vicodin, oxycodone, etc. I thumbed down the first two answers because "real" opium alkaloids ARE needed contained by the process of making a synthetic, while benzodiazepines are NOT opioids.

A synthetic opiate is simply an artificially made chemical whose properties and effects when consumed, are similar to that of an opium derivative.
Benzodiazepenes- such as Diazepam, Nitrazepam and Lorazepam are some examples.
Pentazocine Lactate- a potent painkiller used contained by severe trauma cases is also a synthetic opiate, along with epidurals.

Benzodiazapenes, such as diazapam, are not opiates. Synthetic opiates hold a similiar chemical structure to naturally occurring opiates resembling morphine and heroine, but are manufactured without the use of intuitive opiates. These are often smaller quantity addictive than natural opiates. The most commonly prescribed synthetic opitae is Trammadol, which is used for the treatment of chronic torment and migraines.
Opiates are made up of morphine, codeine, thebaine, Papauerine, noscapine and 25 other alkaloids!
