Chromosomes are more than just DNA--they hold a lot of proteins (like histones) that give support to in packing the DNA.
Chromosomes are visualize by staining cells beside dyes that are taken up by chromosomes. When you view the cell under a microscope, you'll see some cell that are about to experience mitosis, and those cells will own their chromosomes bundled and nicely noticeable. If you then analyze the emblem seen, and quality them by size, you can find the 17th chromosome (I think the numbering go from the largest to the smallest, with the exception of the sex chromosomes, which are call X and Y). Since each cell have two copies of each chromosome, you should be capable of see some characteristic band on the chromosomes, where the dye is preferentially taken up. Chromosomes are matched by the banding pattern, which should be approximately the same on respectively chromosome of the same number.
There are also some glib ways to lyse cells and separate out the DNA, which looks and feel like slimy white goop.
ask your doctor to verbs up your chromosome sheet and it has adjectives of them on there. beside a faint picture, some pictures are pretty damn perfect though.
Professor Beatz (hi Beatz) gave a virtuous description of the traditional techniques for identify chromosomes. There are some newer techniques that use fluorescent label to "paint" each chromosome. The technique are known as SKY, for spectral karyotyping, and FISH, for fluorescent contained by situ hybridization. Basically, there are marker made that are specific for each chromosome. In this mode, each chromosome can be identified, and translocations (transfer of a segment from one chromosome to another) can be identified.
