It's called a BIS monitor.
It sounds as if you are referrring to a BIS (bispectral index) monitor, but it have nothing to do beside pain.
BIS is supposed to be a manoeuvre of anesthetic depth. (You can be pain-free and awake; your body can have no aching medication on board, but you can be unconscious).
BIS is a processed EEG (brain thrash measurement) that gives a single number form 0 to 100, beside high numbers correlating to wakefulness. The impression is that if we keep patients below a in no doubt number, they will not remember anything.
The manufacturer of the machine right to be heard that we can use it to give smaller amount anesthesia, and still be relatively certain that our patients are asleep.
I hold used them and not found them to be particularly practical in most situations. I similar to to keep my patients deeper than the BIS suggests I should.
