Connective tissues are to establish a structural framework and protect delicate organs. these are merely two of the functions of these tissue.
To answer your question, dense tissue is a sub-division of connective tissues.
Connective tissues are classified into three catergories:
1. Connective tissue proper
- Loose: eg. areolar tissue, adipose tissue (aka portly tissue) and reticular tissue
- Dense: eg. dense regular CT (connective tissue) and dense irregular CT.
2. Fluid connective tissue
- blood
- lymph
3. Supporting connective tissue
- bone
- cartilage
